Tournaments

If it’s the potential of big money prizes for small entry fees that you’re looking for then look no further than Pokerstars. Not only did Chris Moneymaker (2003), Greg Raymer (2004) and Joe Hachem (2005) qualify to the WSOP competition through Pokerstars satellites but they walked away with the main event title. Sit and go tables at all levels fill up as soon as you can click the register button which is great for the impatient among us. Certainly player liquidity is not an issue for the room.

One really neat feature is the use of “Tournament Dollars”. If you qualify to a main event through a satellite tournament you do not have to attend the main event but can convert the prize value to Tournament Dollars for use in any other Pokerstars tournament including sit and go’s. That’s a really handy feature if you can’t make it or don’t have a spare 7 hours to take the main tournament seriously.

Software

We really like the graphical presentation of the room. The Oval table is a good use of space, and the circular player icons that enable you to place your own picture or other avatar within is a good personal touch. One feature that can be a mixed blessing is the ability to see your opponents (and they yours) track record simply by looking you up. We do not like this feature as a rule because it provides other players’ information about you that you may not realise is available. On the flip side you can see how good your prospective opponent is and perhaps avoid them. We strongly suggest that all players new to the room select “Options” and then “Hide from search” to avoid this.

Rake

Rake is the percentage of each pot that the room takes out for providing the service. Pokerstars has a no drop no pot philosophy which is to say they only charge rake if there’s a flop. They also cap rake at $5 which for hi-rollers is important. Play at the low end and their charges are also reasonable at 5% with best value found at the $2/$4 threshold.

Overall

There is no better room in terms of game choice and player liquidity. Our only concern with all of these poker superstars that the room puts out is that the quality of play must be high (or else it’s just force of numbers that they’ve had such success). The sheer size of the main events and point driven freerolls makes it a worthwhile contender. We have coded HoldemPokerCalc to operate in conjunction with this room to give our members the best information for informed decisions.
