Hello and welcome to the site.
Bit of a how long is a piece of string question. The key for new players is free practice and all the poker rooms featured on this site offer that. Everest is the only poker room I've seen that has a free practice area where you can play against 3 computer bots (automated players). That can be an interesting challenge although the programming has a way to go to replicate humans. I would say if you can't beat them then don't play for real money.
Next you should play for free for a while (keep in mind that this is still an artificial experience because many of your opponents won't care if they win or lose). Once you think you are good enough then step into a low value game.
Again Everest is good for newcomers for 2 reasons:
1) They have a wide selection of very low value games on offer reflecting in part a non-USA poker base.
2) Card monitoring programs (which give pros and other serious players a small competative edge in predicting what you are likely to do in certain situations based on your past play) do not work on Everest. I will cover these in more detail in a separate article shortly.
Best advice I have is to be be cautious, take your time, play lots of no and low value hands and pick the right card room. As I said for example in my review of Golden Palace on the homepage this is not a room for learners or the faint hearted both of whom should stay away. |

| This is a split pot because both players best five cards are the A2345 on the board. I have a section on split pot situations in the Poker Help box on the left hand side. |
