Post subject: pocket bullets

What's the best way - if any - to play pocket aces? I just was in this tourney (final table) and four people, including me, go all in (me with K 7 hearts) dude to the right of me just calls. Turns out HE had bullets, but across the table, the player flopped a triple J. Crazy huh

Thats an interesting subject, and one that depends on the circumstances you find yourself in.

The overriding point I'd like to get across in answer to that is that while it is clearly a dominating starting hand, in a field of say 10 it's far from guaranteed to win. Most Texas Holdem players see AA and they spend the rest of the hand trying to remain calm and cool so as not to frighten others away. The problem is it is still only a pair and pairs seldom win after the river card.

The basic rules I'd apply would be these:

1) Preflop, depending on your table position raise or call based on your knowledge of your opponents and how many you see in the pot. If you're playing high limit, high stakes you'll find people will bet on anything and you clearly have the advantage with this hand. In lower limit you find people tend to play the cards rather than the people so a raise may scare people out. For example if you're in late position as say the small blind and all those before you fold - it would not be a good idea raising because all you'll pick up is the big blind.

2) Flop changes everything (usually)

3) Post flop you need to alter your play. If the flop shows KK9 for example and were 6 callers who are now betting then you are probably behind and should fold. Yes, I said fold AA something I expect many of you have never done. Remember - it's just a pair. It is 88% likely to win in a heads up pre flop situation but those odds reduce significantly the more players that see the flop.

4) If there were lots of callers and no pairs on the board then you probably are still ahead, but you have to be cautious about hidden sets. I don't want readers to become paranoid that they might be behind but it is an important learning point to realise that post flop you could well be!

In your situation with K7 - that's a terrible hand that I wouldn't be going in with unless you had the table image of a rock and needed to bluff. Best case you catch your king and if you do there's a good chance you'd be behind to someone with another king and higher kicker. In this case you were soundly the underdog facing hidden AA, and possibly a hidden set (you didn't mention whether the JJJ was JJ on the board on in the hole.

Good question Lookgd - thanks for asking it.

Post subject: all about position

early position- call
middle position raise about 4 X BB
late position- if 3 or more players in hand raise 4 X BB. less that 3 raise 3 X BB

Thats just how i would play it, different circumstances different play. I am the master of poker , and can take anyone ha ha ha. Bring it.

I agree with the advise given for the call and raise strategy given above. i usually play that way and i am able to bait people into going all in.
