Question
3 players in a tournament game.
PL1 only has 10 chips left
PL2 and PL3 are well stacked by comparision
Situation A)
After the flop PL1 goes all in 10 chips
PL2 calls the 10 raise.
PL3 calls the 10 and raises 20
PL1 cannot match the raise as he is already all-in so plays on standing to win only 10 chips from the other players if he wins the hand.
Can this happen? Is PL3 allowed to make this raise even though only PL2 can match it?
Assuming he can... consider the following senario: PL2 calls PL3 raise of 20 There are no more raises and after the river there is a show down.
If PL1 wins the hand, do PL2 and PL3 just take back their additional bets? Or does the next best hand win?
Sitation B)
After the flop
PL1 goes all in with 10 chips
PL2 calls
PL3 calls and raises another 20
(Assuming from situation A he can do this)
PL2 calls the raise of 20
After the turn
PL3 raises 30
PL2 folds.
If PL1 wins what happens the chips PL2 has folded? |

Hi David - welcome to the board, and given the length of your question I hope you will sign up as a member!
Situation A) Player 1 goes allin and best case for them is they win the mainpot (this would be called the mainpot as it is the first pot) which would be $30.
Player 2 and 3 have by their actions created a sidepot which is worth $40 (the extra $20 from both that could not be matched by P1).
If player 2 or 3 win they make $70. If player 1 wins he takes his $30 and there is a separate showdown over the $40 sidepot. Either player 2 or 3 will win this, both having lost the mainpot to P1.
Situation B: This happens often and is a solid texas holdem strategy play by player 3. There are 2 pots as before - main for $30 and sidepot $70 ($20+$20+$30). Player 2 by folding has automatically foregone any rights to all of the chips in play (including the main pot). So, if player 1 wins they get $30 and player 3 takes the sidepot of $70. If player 3 wins they take the whole hundred.
I mentioned that it is a good play by P3. Lets say P3 has a marginal hand, but senses that player 2 may well also have a marginal hand then a strong bet at the flop or turn may well see P2 fold. If you can make that happen then you have nothing to lose because even if player 1 wins, you, as player 3 take the $70 sidepot ($50 of which was yours). You will be net $10 up even with the losing hand (+$20 sidepot winnings - $10 loss in the main pot). If P3's strong bet is matched they may still win the pot with their marginal hand and take yet more away. |
