Post subject: Showdown rules

I have what may be an easy question but was a serious dispute among friends at a recent game. It came down to myself and one other player to the river card. He was the dealer so the bid was to me. I bid, he checked my bid. After which he asked "What do you have?" I showed my cards. He then threw his cards in and said "You win" and would not show me his cards. I've read in the rules that you start showing cards with the person who makes the first bet but nothing about my situation. Is he correct that he doesn't have to show me his cards??

Sorry Twwesn, your friend is right. He doesn't have to show you his hand - indeed most people wouldn't because it would give you information (about his bluffing in this case).
