The reason they'll think you're bad is because:

1) you are, or
2) you were unlucky

Much depends on what level you were playing. For example if you were playing 50c/$1 limit holdem on Empire you'd find the competition rather poor and if you are a good player you will make money if you have the patience to grind it out. Move up to say $5/$10 limit or $10/$20 and you'll encounter professional players who are very good indeed.

The other thing that some players (especially the pros) will use to determine your ability is tracking software that builds a profile on you as you play. If you play the same style they'll learn what it is to your dissadvantage. Vary your playing style (easy to say, hard to do).

This site will feature one such system in the next few days.

To improve, you should play low limit until you are making money and then move up gradually - you'll find the standard of play increase considerably as the stakes rise. My advice to all players would be to start low and only move up when you make over time.

Hope this helps.
