Post subject: online poker now a felony in WA state |

| has anyone else heard about this? this is crazy, people in Washington state can now get up to 10 years in prison for playin online poker. that is in the same class as *** offenders. I am somewhat disturded by this as I live in WA. |

Not heard of it. I know the USA legislature is attempting to ban online poker because it takes revenue away from Las Vegas.
I have to say I've never come across a more hypocritical situation in my life. Land of the free? If so, how come big brother gets to decide whether you can or can't play a game of cards? Laws that are totally unenforcable should never be introduced because they make a mockery of real law.
I do not believe such a ban has been passed into law, but I'm following with interest. |

| i dont't understand why they dont allow poker sites in the u.s. so they can get taxes from it. It also seems like it would be more secure since you know where the sites coming from, instead of an island 1,000s of miles away |

Really don't see how it will ever be enforceable... just something more to waste tax payer dollars on, trying to force a politicians morality upon the masses.
And last time I checked, your average **** dealer seemed to have better morals than most of these politicians. |

There only state I'm aware of where it's actually "illegal" (by illegal we are talking passed laws specifically mentioning online gaming, and not vague references to the wartime wire act being relevant) is Las Vegas.
The big players in poker all play online and advertise that you can play against them (they own Full Tilt Poker). They live in Las Vegas, so if anyone wanted to make an example it would be easy.
Party Poker have over 3 million customers, around 90% of them are USA citizens playing from America. Even if there were laws specific to poker then the government would clamp down (Chinese style) on the providers like Party.
If you search good for "legality of online poker" you'll see that there are no laws outside of Nevada that ban it hence my interest in the original post about WA state.
At the Federal level the US Govt wanted to ban online gaming in order to protect the trillion dollar business that is Las Vegas. The legislation introduced attempted to cut off online casinos (spoke to games of chance and therefore excluded poker) but the proposed ban was overturned when Antigua took the USA to the World Trade Organisation claiming the US legislation was unfair to them. Antigua won that case.
The legal position of online gaming at this time has never been tested in the courts and is unclear. The wartime wire act designed to prevent interception of WW2 messages is not going to prevent anyone from enjoying a game of poker. |

As far as the government worrying about Las Vegas losing revenue, there's such a difference between online gambling and going to a casino that just I can't see most people deciding not going to a casino just because they have a computer. I love online poker, but sitting in a casino is such a different experience I wouldn't give that up either.
I think the biggest issue is that Uncle Sam can't get his tax money on your winnings. If they ever figure out a way to do that, then they'll let you gamble to your heart's content.
But it's just like not letting casino's in your state but having OTB, lotto, scratchoff's, etc. What's the difference?
Or making it illegal to smoke almost anywhere except your own house, but you can still buy cigarettes.
A dollar is already taxed so many times (income tax, sales tax, employer tax, more sales tax, revenue tax, more sales tax), how much more do they want out of it?

there is no law for online poker.
they can ripe you off, and theres not a thing you can do..
if your underage and win alot of cash...they can just close your acount and keep it....online poker rooms, can do whatever they like.
the only thing any gov can do about it is...tax you when they notice your cashouts..if your a winning player..making at least 10,000 a year. |

| People, will just find different internet providers that aren't as easily regulated by the governament if this succeeds. As for the banking aspect, overseas companies will not release the information to the us governament so everyone that does that stuff will go overseas and just have them mail checks. Our government is so far behind they will never stop it. People forget that a lot of chinese play online poker and never get caught even with their repressive government, do you actually believe our government can stop us?? |
