This is a great site,,,,but Im new to this so it's a little confusing.
In the poker rooms the buy in for the games are listed like
$5 + $1 (buy in + fee) what does this exactly mean,,,also how do you enter in the tournaments,,most of them are pass word protected.
Like I said Im new to poker and I'm not up on the lingo so any instructions would be helpful
Thanks |

Hello Astros and welcome.
When you go to the tournaments section of an online poker site and see $5+$1 that means that it'll cost you $6 to take part in the game. $5 goes towards the prize pool and the other $1 is what you play to the poker room for hosting the event. This is called the "rake".
If you've gone to Titan you'll see many of the tournaments are locked, which means they are closed to outsiders. On Titan and other sites you can host your own game say with your friends and if you did that you wouldn't want others joining.
In my case I put up $1000 each month for members of this site to play for and I only want contributing members (those that post in forums or blogs) to play. It's therefore locked by me and I give out the password at to all members with sufficient points 24 hours before the match. You'll get invited for having posted in the forum, but you need to keep doing so for future invites.
I suggest you read the "Learn about Poker" section of my site on the left - there's a Glossary and many other useful pages which will help explain the game to you. If I've missed anything there then just come on here and ask questions. I almost always answer within 24 hours.
Once again welcome. |

I've noticed people talking about playing in free tournaments, other than the one you sponsor I don't see anything like that,
Most of the tournaments that are free are locked , if you make a deposit does that open up more tournaments to you...
I would like to start out playin in some of these free tournaments until I become comfortable,,
I was playing in some of the play money rooms, but people play so reckless in those rooms it's hard to learn.
Also whats the minium amount you can deposit,,,and if you did happen to win which will be a long time for me,,,would they just deposit the money in your accout??
Thanks for your response |

Hi Astros,
Your right freerolls with no strings attached are hard to come by in fact mine may be the only regular one going!
You're also right about free play being a poor way to learn the game - I've written about that on the site before, concluding the same as you about the way the play was falsified with people having nothing to lose.
The best way to practice for minimal cost is to play low limit real money No Limit games. Limits can start as low as 1c/2c but more commonly it's 5c/10c. The play at these games is realistic because money is involved but it's very poor quality. As such you'll probably be fine.
The money you deposit at a poker room (which I think is usually minimum $30) is yours and stays in your account with the room. You come and go as you please and it will always be there. If you win then that sum just rises accordingly. You can withdraw at any time. It's no different to having a bank account in that respect. |

Hi Astros,
Don't rush at first. Play only the smallest buy in tournaments. Only when you start placing in the money in these start playing in more expensive tournaments. Personally I never play cash tables, only tournaments.
When you want to withdraw, they can credit the credit card you have used to make your deposit instantly or transfer the money directly to your bank account. There are also many other withdrawal options.
Good luck. |

Hi Astros,
In due course if you enjoy it and find that you are good enough to hold your own or make money then I'd suggest you open a Neteller account. Obviously you're a long way from that at the moment but Neteller is the best payment method by pay for moving money too and from rooms.
Good luck - Onemore is right, take it slow. |

Hi Astros,
Like you i started out in the play money circuit. I learn absolutely nothing of value there. Then i started to download a few other poker sites and notice they had private free rolls that were password protected. So i did a search and found one. Started playing there and started learning the game. Now i have 67 poker sites on my computer and money on most of them. Addictive? yes. Fun? yes. Profitable? it can be but be careful. Any time you think your ready to move up to the next level wait a month then make the move. |
