Hi all
this is my first post, and I have a question for anyone to answer..
Was playing a group of friends last night. The final 5 th card came down and showed a 4th diamond card. I have a 7 of diamonds, and the other players left in the round had, a diamond but lower cards. The river contained some higher diamond cards and some lower. My card was the highest out of the other cards being held by the other players. In the end it was discussed, that I should win because my 5 card flush contained the highest of all the numbered diamonds etc....
I think from memory there was an ACE, QUEEN, 4, 2 of diamonds, on the river and some other card and I had the 7 of diamonds and the other players had lower cards than mine.
Was I right in arguing I had the best flush, or should we have split the pot.
I have played alot online, but when you play with friends etc... it gets difficult to actually get the rules right....
any help on my dispute would be helpfull.....
Thanks |

Hi Onthepulse and welcome.
The cards within the flush do rank so you were the winner of this pot. The only way a flush will be a split is if all 5 cards are on the board and are higher than those held by anyone else.
The other common misconception is that if the highest card is shared then the ranking of cards stops there "we both had a King high flush". This is also incorrect. If player 1 holds J6 suited and player 2 has 83 suited with the board showing K9724 of the same suit then player 1 still takes it even though both had a K high flush.
Be wary of this when betting flushes particularly where 4 suited cards are on the board.
Please see my section on Split Pots in the poker help box on the left hand side. |
