|
|
I got some useful advice the other day on playing the hidden set. You know it's a great feeling when you've got a small or medium par, call the flop and hit the set. The hidden 3 of a kind is one of the strongest hidden card holdings you can have, so the question becomes how to play it.
Most of my playing life I've played this hand slowly (my natural tendancy to let others do the betting and come over the top at the end). I heard from a pro the other day that this is a poor strategy over time. Leading out betting with the hidden trips is the best play I'm told so I thought I'd share it with you, and will in due course let you know how I get on with my new strategy. |

| I thinnk it's good to bet when there's a flush or straight draw on the board becuase you don't want to let someone see the next card for free when there drawing to a hand that will beat you. but it there aren't any draws on the board i think it's better to slow play to allow someone else to do the betting for you. |

| And that was my former strategy Obs. Consensus among professionals is that it's better to lead out betting with a hidden set. |

| I normally try to check and hope they bet high then when it gets back to me I raise them and see where we can go from there. |

that is the strongest play. the pro was correct (imagine that ). You don't want to bet to hard though...the key is to increase the pot and gain valueable info. if there aren't 2 suits or connectors your chasers are looking for a high pair or trips (if you suspect they caught a pair and are looking for Trips then try to read if they are looking higher than you) if there ARE 2 suited cards or connectors on the table then your chasers are flush or straight. either way you want to increase the pot and get info. typically you don't want this hand to get past the turn.. so bet it right... if their draw card comes then don;t bet more than you did the first time, but if it doesn;t, protect your hand by really pushing the pot making it hard for them to stay in for the draw. And remember, you can always be playing against higher trips if your not the nut trips on the board. |

| Why is that you might ask? There is no reason for anyone to think that you would lead with a set. Because common play is to check it and trap. So you lead out and they put you on top pair or some other such hand. They end up paying you more in the long run that way. |

Its all depends on situations. Sometimes you'll play slowly sometimes not. You cant say you have only one way of playing cards. Try to be more interesting with your play |

I was the same - always liked to slow play a set on the flop. Problem is twofold in my opinion -
Firstly - if everyone else checks to the river along with you you often get no callers to your final bet and the pot is small.
Secondly - the risk is you get outdrawn.
If there are a few players still in I now always put in a small to medium raise on the flop - make it look like I've hit a pair and then something similar on the turn. (i like putting the same bet on the turn because you'll often get re-raised following that). If you've still got a caller at the end and I'm pretty sure I have the best hand I'll either go all in or else put in a large bet if I think they'll come over the top.
With a smallish bet on the flop you'll often be unlucky and get everyone to fold but chances are you wouldn't have made much later anyway if that was the case.
Alternatively - you can always put in an oversized bet on the flop like you're trying to scare people off an AK which hasn't hit.
Either way - there are too many variables - all tactics can work or not work at different times - just hope your opponents have a good hand....
......and that yours is better! |
