HI
I started playing MTTs, and well I don't do great! At least thats what I think! I play 10 - 12 MTTs a weak and I get ITM in 8-9 of them, But I never reached a final table! So I get my money back plus some extra $$ but it's not that great. I keep getting all this great cards and then the flop, turn and river kill me. Plus I get called from the big stacks and all the time get beat. So, any sugestions? Any articles I can read about the last part of a MTT (how to play to get to final table) and things like that?
Thank you |

| Tze - I agree with the comment above. You do though as you recognise need to change your final table play. I've written a several articles on tournament play and one specific to final table strategy in large tourneys. You can find it in the scrolling articles at the bottom of the homepage - just be patient for it to come up. |

maybe you can change your style but that depends also on how your opponents play the game
anyway practice makes perfect |

Hi,
I had the same "problem" some months ago where I reached places in the small money in about 60-70% of the tournaments I played but never ended top 10.
Then I experimented a little bit and changed my style of playing. During the last two months I end up in the money only in about 30% of the tournaments I play but reach final table in about every 10th tourney I play.
What did I do?
Lets say the top 100 reach the money. When there are about 150-200 people left everybody with an about average stack could reach the money just by sitting out. At this time a lot of people tend to play very passive, try to avoid high risks, don't defend their blinds unless they hold a VERY good hand,... (same as I did too in the past). That's the moment I now start playing more agressive including a few bluffs against people with about average stack-size, not worrying about going all-in and probably ending 101st. Well, sometimes it doesn't work and so I don't end up in the money as often as I did before. But if I'm lucky I can build up a decent stack that makes it far easier to reach final table and thats the place where you can win really nice amounts of money.
For me this change of tactics worked fine, maybe it will work for you too.
Good luck at the tables.

| Thought about that strategy and it's really good if u can play that way and if u can take being BUBBLE BOY (if it's the case). I'm starting a tournament in a few minutes let's see what happens. |

Fuss has it correct - that's exactly how you should play the bubble, taking advantage of everyone elses fear of losing. If you continue to play steady at this point then you'll never build a stack great enough to help you win the game. If you're going to be out is there really much difference between 101'st and 80th?
For my part I'd rather go out trying and with blinds being as large as they will be at this point you collect a lot from folds. Watch out for the short stacks they are the dangerous players at this point - so push only against medium stacks. Large stacks should call you anyway just to put you out. If you survive this point in a tourney then you should do really well because you'll have enough chips to become the table bully. Often opponents will give up against you when you have enough chips and fold everything but AA, KK playing for minor places. |
