What is anybody's thoughts on using poker calculators online. I dislike this idea of it being used.

I personally like them. They can be quite helpful calculating your outs and odds. I dont like the ones giving out advice telling you whether you should call, bet or fold but the ones just working out the hand status, outs and odds are useful. You can look at the data and make a more informative desicion.

using poker calculators to me is simlar to reading books.

it gets you educated so you understand the math behind the game.

but ultimately at the table you will need to be able top make quick estimates and base your decision on that as well as info from the table, i.e. reads.

I like using them after the fact to analyze hands I won or lost with. I'm able to reinforce my decisions, and determine percentage-wise whether or not my all-in or call was the right play with the hand I had. By using these programs, I'm now able to analyze some of the percentages in my head (as I play), and am fairly accurate at doing so because of my use of them.

However, having said this, I think they also can tempt you to play hands you otherwise wouldn't feel comfortable doing, due it being the "statisically correct play". While they are interesting, and can pinpoint the amount of outs you have (plus the chances of your winning the hand), you shouldn't become too reliant on them, or make your decisions solely on what a calculator says. I've heard that using these programs while you can play can improve your ability as a player, but I would much rather make the decisions I make based on instincts, or my read on an opponent instead of doing so because a calculator told me it was the correct play.

I usually go back and check to see whether it was or not afterwards, and see no problem in doing so then. Doing so can take the sting out of some of your beats, and cause you to become more analytical and learn more as you play.

I dont like to use them because , I like to take a gamble now and then. I dont need seeing the odds to change my mind.

Post subject: It all depends...

I think using poker calculators are good and bad.... It can be very helpful being a first time poker player to understand your odds but can be bad when people don't know how to use them and just call or bet with bad cards....

My 'opinion' is simple. Anyone NOT USING a calculator has decided to play at a disadvantage.

The advantages of using are many - not the least of which is training. I can't think of a single valid reason not to use ??

Will when it comes to using one or not is up to each one playing. The program is a good tool to use when your new to the game. But when you get to a game and you are looking face to face with someone your poker calculator is on your shoulder and you best hope that you rememer how to calculate those odds.

Finder - thats very true, but one of the best ways to learn the odds is to be exposed to them all the time online with my program.
