No you heard correctly. The Senate passed an 80 page port security bill last Saturday. Attached to the end of it was a piece of legislation that makes it illegal for Americans to gamble online. Gambling in the context of the bill (if not reality) includes online poker. Therefore if you are American or live in America then you will be prevented from playing poker (or any other form of online gaming) in around 10 days time. It seems to me that the so called "land of the free" has decided on your behalf that you should not play poker. Similar to China in that respect.

The law will be enforced by the requirement that no bank, credit card, debit card or wire payment will be able to be made to poker providers (like Party, Titan and all the other rooms on this site) so you will be offline. Party will be a strange place without Americans - we'll lose about 40,000 players a night. That's why their stock price fell by 60% on Monday.

The upshot for me is that perhaps 75% of my site membership will be unable to play anything in about 10 days time. That will have an effect on my ability to fund the monthly $1000 freeroll (henceforth open exclusively to Non-Americans), and I'll let my non-American players know the outcome once I'm able to assess it in due course.

What can I say, other than you chose to vote them in.....Sorry Americans it was good playing against you Crying or Very sad

By the way it's not offshore gambling thats banned - it's all gambling. Its very like the prohibition of alchohol in the 1920s.

you are partly right and partly wrong on this. It doesn't make it illegal for us to play online poker. But it does say that are banks can not process payments from and to online gambling sites.

there is ways around that law though. The one major one is for americans to use companys like net teller for are money. Because they are based in the uk the will not be held to this change. And it is only poker transactions that are ban through the banks. You can still bet on horse racing online just not poker. Also doyles room and some other sites are not being affected by this they say it will be buisness as usual

dgoin - thats just not the case. Neteller's share price fell by 60% last week for this very reason. You won't be able to play in a couple of weeks time - doyles are being upbeat while they work out what to do next but I do not expect to see Americans playing poker online by the end of October.

If you or anyone else finds a provider that can support US play then drop me an email so that I can share it with the THP membership.

I am just repeating what i was told about netteller. And i have no worrys about playing there will be work arounds made before anything happens. And it also will be 3 to6 months before anything comes in place because the banks will have to see how they will check each payment and where it is going. And the bill is only against payments to banks doesn't say we can't still play freerolls. Not trying to have a pissing contest here just sharing what i have been told from doyles and other sites that are in a better position of understanding then most.

dgoin,

I hope you are right and a work around can be found. Otherwise the poker rooms out there will be a very lonely place.

Absolute Poker is pleased to announce that it is business as usual. In light of recent changes outlined in the media we also want to take the opportunity to let you know that playing at Absolute Poker is both safe and secure. AP Advantage

Importantly Absolute Poker is a privately held operation, which gives our business model more flexibility and creativity in operating that our publicly held counterparts don’t have. Furthermore, the Safe Ports Act passed by the US Congress on September 30th neither prohibits nor makes it illegal for any US customer to transact with AbsolutePoker.*** and therefore the customer experience at AbsolutePoker.*** will not change. Our business continues to run as normal and our executive team expects to see the business to continue to grow in both the short and long term.

Payment Security

We are exploring all of our options with our existing payment processors and ensure any existing or new customer that your funds are safe and secure. Indications are that many of our payment providers will be unaffected by this law and their business will also be able to operate uninterrupted and unimpeded.

If you have any questions on anything relate

Based on the fact that I've had no reply to my specific email request I conclude that they are selling snow. If they had a payment solution that would work I'm sure they would have said so - as is it looks like they are hoping to retain players for as long as possible while sharing the same problem all the rules have which is that the USA traffic is off limits. Sure you can all play for now, but in a week or so when the bill is signed and come reload time you'll be unable to do so. Sad

it will take more then a week for this to all get sorted out. Most estimates will be a few months because banks will have to see what it will take to track each transaction that comes through their system and where and what it is for and in the post about AP poker it says they are exploring there options right now on how to work around it not saying they do have a way yet.
