Post subject: Dealing Holdem at home

When dealing a game of Texas Holdem at home, Are we required to trash a card before the flop and before the turn and river or is it just the next five card in the deck?

Thanks and Best wishes from Kansas City MO

Interesting question - thanks.

The practice you're referring to is "burning" a card. If you do play a game where the dealer burns before dealing then you would burn one before the flop, turn and river (3 cards total). These are all trashed face down so no player knows what they are. No need to do it at all in a home game so long as everyone is aware of the house rule. Burning is a predominantly American concept - far less common in European games.

I guess it's just down to what you are used to.

I'd advise you always to burn a card. Of course you decide on your own rules, but it was not invented for fun.

The rationale is this: sometimes after playing a while with a deck some card or cards may actually show little markings on the edges or back, be it made on purpose or by accident from bending the cards and such.

All the players have quite some time to see the upper card's backside and thus perhaps get a clue about what's on the face side. Burning a card before dealing any of the board cards takes away that risk.
