Post subject: I'm new here...had a few questions about split pots.

I'm just starting to understand split pots and side pots. I understand split pots with high cards,1pr, 2pr, str8s, flushes, quads, but I'm not sure about trips. I noticed that somtimes they're split, and sometimes they're not. How come? I know it's something about the kickers on the board, I think. Is it similar to 2 pr being chopped when the highest board card is higher than both player's kickers with 2 pr. & becomes a kicker and over-rides both player's personal kickers? And when the highest kicker with 2pr is not on the board? I know it has to be best 5, but I'm still shaky on that. Can anybody help me with this?

Also can anybody give me more examples on split pots too, so I can learn? I'm still new to this.

Hi Robby,

Check out my Split Pots section on the left which covers most of this topic off. In all cases it's the best 5 cards that win, and all kickers up to the fifth card count.

So lets discuss some examples:

Board AAKQ6
Player 1 A7
Player 2 A3

This is a split pot because both players have AAAKQ as their best 5.

Board AJ662
Player 1 AQ
Player 2 A2

Player 1 wins because he has AA66Q over player 2's AA662. The fact that player 2 has 3 pairs is irrelevant as it's the best 5 that count.

Board AA876
Player 1 A5
Player 2 A4

This is a split pot situation because both players have AAA87 as their best hand.

Hope this helps.

In the 2nd example. Wouldn't It be AA66Q beats AA66J? You said AA66Q beats AA662. the boars is AJ662. Player 1 had AQ, Player 2 had A2.
